The Virgin of the charity of El Cobre (Virgen de la Caridad del Cobre)

A pleasant drive about 12 miles northwest of Santiago leads to this basilica dedicated to the Virgin del Cobre, whose image allegedly appeared on a piece of floating wood to three men in a boat during a rough storm; the Virgin is said to have miraculous powers, and pilgrims journey here every September to seek help and pay tribute to her for their good fortunes.

Did you know that….Pope John Paul made a visit to the Basíca del Cobre near Santiago during his 1998 trip to Cuba. Inside the basilica, among the many gifts left at the shrine to the Virgin del Cobre is Ernest Hemingway’s Nobel Prize, which he left there in 1952.
